Last year, Google added a new program to its Google News Initiative (GNI). The GNI Subscriptions Lab is a six-month program developed in partnership with the Local Media Association and FTI Consulting. It was designed to help local media develop paid content products.

The GNI News Lab team is on a mission to collaborate with journalists and entrepreneurs to drive innovation in news. Offering partnerships and training in over 50 countries, the News Lab uses Google technology to tackle important challenges in journalism today.

Working with newspapers, they are building coalitions, developing partnerships, conducting research, and creating training. They are focused on improving the following four areas:

  1. Trust and misinformation
  2. Local news
  3. Inclusive journalism
  4. Emerging technologies

In addition to News Lab, GNI, the Local Media Association and FTI Consulting created the Digital Subscriptions Playbook to build a framework for accelerating publishers’ digital subscription transformations. In it, they identify and answer the five questions they believe are tied to success.

  1. Why should it be my top priority?
  2. What is the revenue opportunity?
  3. How does my publication’s current state compare?
  4. How do I start making progress?
  5. How do I know I’m on the right path?
